In West Virginia it has become crystal clear that the glory days of mountaineer football have, at the very least, gone into hiding under head coach, Neal Brown. WVU fans everywhere are extremely frustrated with Brown’s performance and they don’t mind taking to social media (and the skies) to make that point very clear.
Having a frustrated fanbase didn’t seem to be good enough for Neal Brown, however, as he insisted on taking a frustrated fanbase and turning it into an irate one with his now-viral “Did they have fun?” comment. You know, the comment that pissed off the WVU fans, turned into a nationality-covered story and, most recently, drew mockery from the head coach of our biggest rival, Pitt.
We get it, Mr. Brown, winning doesn’t matter in football as long as the fans have fun drinking beer in the parking lot and you collect your paycheck. The fact that we are 3-16 against top 25 opponents under your leadership should be an indicator to you that we are indeed NOT having fun!
We as fans had fun when Morgantown was one of the most feared places for an opposing team to play in, especially at night. We had fun when we were a consistently nationally-ranked football program. We had fun when demolishing the SEC champion Georgia Bulldogs in the 2006 Sugar Bowl. We had fun beating the Big Twelve champion Oklahoma Sooners in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl. We also certainly had fun hanging 70 points on Clemson in the 2012 Orange Bowl.
You wouldn’t know anything about that type of fun, nor do I think you even care. Based on your comments, your idea of fun is for fans to pay hard-earned money to watch the team get their asses kicked in big-game situations, and then listen to you make a thousand excuses for yourself. But hey, at least we beat Albany!
Fan frustration has grown to such a fever pitch that some fans have donated to A fundraiser set up on the crowdfunding site *spotfund that has raised the necessary $4,685 to hire a pilot and plane to fly around Morgantown on Saturday with a banner reading “Are you having fun? Fire Neal Brown.”
The flight is scheduled to happen for three hours and to be in the air before and during the game.
This Saturday brings another ranked opponent and another night game to Mountaineer Field, but will it bring another sold-out crowd? I highly doubt that the attendance will be typical for a night game in Morgantown this weekend. I predict that it won’t be. I feel as if WVU fans are now to the point of an unofficial boycott of Neal Brown football. We will find out on Saturday at 7:30 pm when the pig skin is kicked off and we take on Kansas State.
However, It is homecoming and there will be the plane spectacle, so maybe that will be enough to fill the stadium once more.
